In order to provide about a hundred monks with a good environment for the pursuit of higher knowledge of Buddhism, Shangpa Rinpoche built Vikrama Shila Buddhist Institute in Nepal to benefit the members of the Sangha community in Pokhara.
The course of studies focuses on the five major texts:
Buddhist Logic (Pramana), Middle Path (Madhyamika), Moral Ethics (Vinaya), Wisdom / Ultimate Knowledge (Prajna Paramita), and (loosely translated) Buddhist Science (Abhi Dharma). The monks are also educated in English, Nepali, and Tibetan and information technology.

A day for the monks begins with a Morning Prayer session at 6:30 a.m. during which they chant two prayers: Manjushri (Deities for Wisdom) and Green Tara (Deities for Removing Obstacles). School begins at 8 a.m. and concludes at 3:30 p.m., with designated periods outside of class time for self-study. At 4 p.m. the evening prayer session begins, and the Mahakala prayer (the Guardians of the Buddha's teachings) is recited with musical instruments. With this schedule they are able to fuse prayer with study, both important features in the development of a Buddhist monk's.
